An Animal Response to Poetry

In this video An Animal Response to Poetry, Cecilia Vicuña speaks with Gary Sullivan about poetry and performance. She talks about the importance of a relationship with language. She invokes Borges in her attempt to explain the difference between the poem and the performance:

Someone asked Borges, “How can you tell that a poem is a poem?” Borges responded, “When you are in the presence of the poem, it is as when you are in the presence of the sea.”

How can you tell that a poem is a poem? What do you think about Vicuña’s response to this question?

  1. As a newcomer to poetry, Vicuna’s response really helped me in my understanding of what makes poetry, poetry. For me, poetry is the connection and relationship of words to emotions and back again. A poem is like a journey to a place in the heart, body or soul- a great poem takes one to all three places.

    • I think you’d really enjoy her work, Mona. Also, there are more videos of her up on YouTube. I’m enamored with her work right now.
